The republic of Belarus is situated in the eastern part of Europe with Latvia and Lithuania on the north, the Ukraine on the south, Russian Federation on the east and Poland on the west.
The capital of the State is Minsk. The country has a strategic geographical position for communications between west and east, north and south. The distance between Minsk and Warsaw is 500 km., to Moskow- 700 km., to Berlin- 1060km., to Vienna- 1300km.
The territory occupies 207,6 thousands square km. The stretch from the north to the south is 560 km.(350 mil), from the east to the west- 650 km.(460 mil). Belarus is bigger than Australia, Ireland, Portugal, and Greece.
The country is situated in the centroeuropean temporal zone: GMT + 2 hours.
Belarus consists of 6 regions with the centers in Minsk, Grodno, Brest, Vitebsk, Mogilev, and Gomel. Each region is divided into the several districts.
The Republic of Belarus , as an independent sovereign State has appeared on the geographical map not a long time ago, in 1991, and that is why for many people it is still like a peculiar terra incognita. It is a homeland of blue lakes and green forests, sunny meadows and spacious fields, with a great number of calm and beautiful rivers.
The population is more than 10 million people, mainly belorussians, and also polish, russian, ukranian, jewish and other nationalities. More than 30 % of the population live in the villages. In Minsk concentrated approximately 1/5 of the total population of the country.
